Four Things You Can’t Miss at the 2016 Athletic Business Show

For 34 years, the Athletic Business (AB) Show has been the leading informational event and trade show for athletic, recreation, and fitness professionals. The event hosts more than 250 suppliers and manufacturers from a multitude of industries and attracts attendees from all 50 states and 21 countries across the globe.

From scoreboards and entertainment systems to gym wall padding and sports flooring, the AB Show gives you exclusive access to nearly every component of fitness, recreation, sports or wellness centers and offers the unique ability to strengthen your organization, program, or facility with equipment, renovation, and operation demonstrations from the industry’s leaders in innovation.

Action Floor Systems® will be attending the three-day expo to offer attendees and exhibitors information on athletic surfaces and sub floors, and how their facilities and programs can benefit from recent advancements in flooring technology.

“This event is truly a unique opportunity as it offers attendees a chance to discuss their facility’s vision, user profile, and needs firsthand with designers and factory staff and representatives,” states Ron Fenhaus, Action Floors V.P. of Sales, North America. “We are excited to have the ability to share our product’s performance and compare our practices to other providers.”

With so much to do and see, here’s a list of the four things you’ll want to check out at the 2016 AB Show.

  1. Preconference Tour: University of Central Florida – Rec Center and CFE Arena

To kick off the AB Show on Wednesday, November 16, you will be given an opportunity to tour UCF’s Recreation and Wellness Center, as well as the CFE Arena. Throughout the tour, you’ll learn about the background of the facilities and future plans for expansion.

Originally opening in 2002, the UCF Recreation and Wellness Center is home to many of the university’s sports, athletic clubs, and fitness programs. With more than 150,000 square feet, the rec center features a custom climbing wall, tennis courts, numerous sports fields, pools, group exercise studios, and cardio and weight areas.

The 252,000-square foot CFE Arena, which opened in 2007, features 10,000 seats, 16 luxury suites, and a club lounge. The arena hosts many of UCF’s sports teams, including men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball. In addition, the facility holds community events, graduations, and approximately 15-20 concerts each year.

The event begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Orange County Convention Center with the first stop on the tour at the UREC Center at 8:15 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., you will transition to the CFE Arena before arriving back at Orange County Convention Center at 12:15 p.m.

  1. Design 101: An Owner’s Guide to Managing the Design and Construction Process

On Wednesday, November 16, the AB Show will be hosting a preconference workshop on how to best help your clients navigate a new or renovation project. This workshop will provide resources from design experts at CannonDesign on best practices when it comes to communicating with architects and contractors.

This workshop will teach you common terminology used in the design and construction industry and will offer insight on how to balance quality, quantity, and cost when managing a project. The event will take place in the West Building – Hall D of the Orange County Convention Center from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

  1. Panel – Timely Topics: Opportunities and Challenges in Facility Design and Operations

Perhaps one of the most exciting additions to this year’s expo is the design and construction panel on the challenges commonly faced when designing and operating collegiate and recreation facilities, and the measures you can take to solve them. On Friday, November 18 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., you are invited to attend a panel of accomplished architects and engineers for a stimulating rapid-fire discussion on key issues and current trends in the industry.

In addition to learning about hot button issues in the fast world of athletic facility design and development, you will also be taught how to apply management strategies in your upcoming or existing programs.

The panel will feature six key players from across the nation, including consultants, architects, and principal designers in sports facility construction. Each panelist will discuss best practices in facility management and planning for industry growth.

  1. Swing by the Technology Pavilion

In addition to workshops and panels, be sure to stop by the Technology Pavilion, a brand new booth to the AB Show this year!

The Technology Pavilion highlights some of the show’s exhibitors who offer products and solutions that defy traditional athletic categories. Get inspired by seeing the latest developments to help you build your own ideas for your facility or program.

“We will be highlighting our tennis and pickleball court systems at the AB Show,” says Ron. “Our systems offer exceptional athletic performance as a playing surface as well as for player health, safety, and long-term well-being.  You can only stress your body and joints on unforgiving surfaces for so long before nagging pain and injuries creep up and limit your activity and playing time.”
